Discover the Rich History of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra

Orchestral music in South Bend has a storied past, beginning 14 years before the South Bend Symphony Orchestra was officially formed. In 1894, violinist Frederic Ingersoll brought his European musical experience to South Bend, teaching violin privately until the establishment of the South Bend Conservatory in 1906. By 1918, he directed the conservatory and created the first professional symphony in the area, providing invaluable musical opportunities for local musicians.

Despite the challenges of the Great Depression, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra was reborn in 1932 under the leadership of Australian violinist Edwyn H. Hames. Starting with a group of 44 volunteer musicians, the orchestra quickly became a vital part of the community, performing concerts and engaging audiences. Hames conducted for an impressive 40 years, and today, the Symphony continues to thrive, hosting three concert series and over 50 free chamber music performances annually.
