About Soundscapes

Founded by Executive Director Anne Henry, Soundscapes was inspired by the El Sistema model of community-based orchestras. Since its inception in 2009, Soundscapes has grown from 40 first graders playing bucket drums to serving over 350 children in grades one through twelve. This innovative program in Newport News empowers students with the skills they need to succeed academically and socially through music education.

Impact of Soundscapes

Soundscapes is committed to measurable outcomes, utilizing a customized evaluation tool developed by Dr. David Dirlam. This rigorous assessment confirms that students in the program experience significant growth in both musical and behavioral skills. Remarkably, the achievement gap for students living in poverty is eliminated over time, demonstrating the profound impact of music education on their lives.
