Empowering Women and Girls

Soroptimist International of Albany was founded on September 16, 1987, by twenty-five dedicated women from the Albany business community. Their mission is to promote the "Best for Women" and serve the community through impactful projects. The journey began with the Elementary Assistance Fund, addressing the needs of disadvantaged children by providing them with essential school clothing and supplies, fostering their self-esteem.

Over the years, the organization has expanded its reach, supporting women in Central and South America by providing clean water and resources to build sustainable livelihoods. In the late 90s, efforts shifted to Uganda, where the club helped women construct housing blocks, enabling girls to access education on par with boys.

The signature project, initiated in 1988, focuses on helping women achieve further education. Many of these women are heads of households, striving to provide for their families. By offering scholarships for trade schools, community colleges, and universities, Soroptimist International of Albany equips women with the skills needed to thrive in the workforce.

In addition to education, the organization has made significant strides in health support. The annual Walk for the Cause of Breast Cancer Awareness has raised over $900,000 to assist women without health insurance in meeting their medical expenses. Since its inception, the event has grown from 300 participants to a community-wide initiative.
