Our Story

On June 1, 1995, the lives of Julie and Alex's family changed forever with the diagnosis of Fragile X Syndrome. This genetic disorder brings cognitive delays, severe anxiety, and social challenges. In response, Leslie and her husband founded the Fragile X Alliance of Ohio in 1997, providing support to families facing similar struggles. Over the years, they organized fundraisers for medical research and awareness campaigns, culminating in the establishment of the first Fragile X medical clinic in northeast Ohio in 2005.

Addressing a Critical Need

As their children grew, the couple faced a daunting question: Where will their children live when they can no longer provide care? Traditional group homes often lead to isolation and uncertainty. To combat this, Solon Community Living was born, aiming to create a nurturing, community-integrated neighborhood for individuals with disabilities. This innovative housing model focuses on accessibility, sustainability, and support, ensuring that residents can thrive in a safe environment.

Impact Statement

Solon Community Living is dedicated to fostering a supportive atmosphere for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization is currently running an Annual Appeal to raise $150,000, which is vital for maintaining high-quality care and services, including security, independent life skills training, and engaging resident activities.
