Our Story

As violent hate crimes against Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, co-organizers Michelle Tran, Kenji Jones, and Howard Chen took a stand. They founded Soar Over Hate to empower individuals to protect themselves and combat anti-Asian racism. Since March 2021, the organization has expanded its volunteer base and distributed over 45,000 personal alarms, whistles, and pepper spray across New York and California. Through events like 'AAPI Care Fairs,' Soar Over Hate has built a supportive community, offering self-defense classes, puppy therapy, meditation, group therapy, mental health referrals, and hepatitis B screenings.

Impact

Soar Over Hate has empowered over 300 individuals through free self-defense classes and provided more than $4,000 in therapy sessions for victims of anti-Asian hate incidents.
