Discover the Legacy of Snug Harbor
Founded in 1801 by Robert Richard Randall, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden has evolved from a haven for retired sailors into a vibrant cultural hub. Originally established to care for 'aged, decrepit, and worn-out sailors,' this historic site has transformed over the centuries, expanding from three buildings to a sprawling complex of 50 structures. By the early 20th century, it was one of the richest charitable institutions in the United States, offering a self-sustaining community complete with farms, workshops, and recreational areas.
Preserving History and Culture
In the mid-20th century, as the need for such a haven diminished, the historic buildings faced deterioration. However, thanks to the efforts of local activists and the New York City Landmarks Commission, key structures were preserved and repurposed as a public cultural resource. In 1975, Snug Harbor Cultural Center was established, and in 2008, it merged with the Staten Island Botanical Gardens to create a unique destination where history, arts, and nature converge.
