Our Story
In January 1996, a group of dedicated citizens in the Morrisville-Smithfield community recognized a critical need for prehospital emergency care. Led by Margaret Brody and Jeff Mitchell, they proposed the formation of a rescue squad at a Village Board meeting. With the support of 35 volunteers, the Smithfield Eaton Volunteer Ambulance Corp (SEVAC) was born.
From humble beginnings, SEVAC quickly gained momentum. The Village of Morrisville leased an ambulance for just one dollar, and community members rallied to provide essential equipment and facilities. Clarence Holbert's generous contributions, including a $10,000 promise and a radio for communication, were pivotal in establishing SEVAC's operational capabilities.
On August 1, 1996, SEVAC completed its first emergency call, marking the start of a journey dedicated to saving lives. Over the years, the organization has grown significantly, expanding its services and capabilities. In 2022, SEVAC reached a record high of 926 calls, providing vital emergency medical care and ambulance transportation across multiple townships, including Eaton, Smithfield, Fenner, Nelson, and Lebanon.
SEVAC's commitment to the community has been unwavering. In 2018, the organization hired its first professional staff, enhancing its ability to respond to emergencies. The expansion of its district in 2022 to include the entirety of the Town of Eaton and a portion of the Town of Lebanon further solidified SEVAC's role as a crucial provider of emergency services in the region.
