Our Story

Founded over a decade ago in response to the insurance crisis following Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, Smart Home America emerged from the collective efforts of concerned citizens in Alabama and Mississippi. This organization was established to enhance local planning practices and educate communities on safeguarding their futures. By identifying the IBHS FORTIFIED construction standard, Smart Home America became the first organization to systematically implement these standards, paving the way for resilient communities.

Our Impact

Smart Home America has successfully advocated for improved building codes and the adoption of FORTIFIED construction standards. This has led to a significant reduction in insurance claims and increased resilience in coastal communities. Notably, over 17,000 FORTIFIED homes in Baldwin County sustained zero insurance claims during Hurricane Sally, showcasing the effectiveness of these standards.
