Our Story

Founded in 2009 by two queer white women from the South, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) was born from a call to action by Black movement leaders. In response to the fear and racism that surged following the election of the first Black president, SURJ has grown into the largest formation of explicitly anti-racist white organizing in U.S. history. With nearly 200 grassroots chapters, SURJ is dedicated to creating a world where racial and economic justice thrive.

Impact

SURJ Education Fund mobilizes over one million people, fostering a multi-racial majority for justice through deep organizing projects and base-building initiatives. This collective effort empowers communities to stand against violence and fear.
