Our Story
Founded in 1991 by Kathryn Icenhower, Norma Stoker-Mtume, and Xylina Bean, SHIELDS for Families emerged from a pressing need to support infants exposed to drugs during pregnancy. Starting with limited resources in a trailer at the Martin Luther King Jr. medical center, the organization has grown to offer over 30 programs aimed at behavioral health, substance use disorder treatment, vocational training, and child welfare.
