Our Story
In the spring of 1970, a passionate call for singers was issued by Harrisonburg attorney David Hatmaker, inviting choir members from across the central Shenandoah Valley to join together for a remarkable performance at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. This invitation sparked an overwhelming response, with around 200 singers gathering for the first rehearsal at Madison College. The excitement of performing alongside a symphony orchestra was palpable, and the group quickly formed the Shenandoah Valley Choral Society (SVCS).
Under the guidance of esteemed conductors, the SVCS has flourished over the decades, presenting a diverse repertoire that includes classical masterpieces, patriotic favorites, and contemporary works. The annual concert schedule has become a cherished tradition, featuring beloved events such as the "Celebrate America!" concert, which honors veterans and celebrates the spirit of Independence Day.
With over 125 active members today, the SVCS continues to embrace the cultural life of the Shenandoah Valley, providing opportunities for young soloists and engaging audiences through high-quality choral performances. The society's commitment to cultural enrichment and community engagement remains steadfast, ensuring that the joy of choral music resonates throughout the region.
