Our Story

Shelter the Homeless was established in 1988 to alleviate human suffering and foster economic well-being. The organization began with a single community shelter in downtown Salt Lake City, operated by Traveler’s Aid Society, now known as The Road Home. Over the years, Shelter the Homeless expanded its mission by acquiring land and developing facilities that provide essential programs and services to help homeless individuals achieve self-sufficiency.

Today, the organization operates multiple facilities, including family shelters and three permanent supportive housing complexes: Palmer Court, Wendell Apartments, and The Magnolia, which is set to open in May 2021. In 2019, three Homeless Resource Centers were completed, providing emergency shelter and supportive services for 700 men and women daily.

Impact

Shelter the Homeless is dedicated to making homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring by connecting individuals with community services that promote housing stability and sustainable self-sufficiency.
