About Shelter Dog Transport Alliance

Founded in January 2020, the Shelter Dog Transport Alliance emerged from a dire need witnessed at an overcrowded rural shelter in Western North Carolina. The shelter director faced overwhelming challenges with larger dogs, medical cases, and senior pets, often left behind in the shelter system. Recognizing the potential for rescue through transport to reputable organizations in New York and Canada, the Alliance was born out of a commitment to make the impossible possible.

Within two months, the Alliance successfully launched its first transport trip, moving 31 shelter animals to safety. Today, the organization operates three transport vans—Big Honey, Big Kitty, and Big Hun 2—providing free transport services to any shelter dog or cat in need. With a network of over a dozen rescue families, the Alliance supports more than 22 county shelter systems and rescues across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky.

Impact of the Alliance

Since its inception, the Shelter Dog Transport Alliance has transported 8,804 shelter animals to safety, returning $181,000 in funds to local rescues and county shelters. With 179 successful transports launched, the Alliance continues to expand its reach and impact, uniting shelters and rescues to maximize life-saving efforts.
