Our Story

The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County was established in 1982 through a partnership between St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the Interfaith Council of Congregations. Initially a volunteer-driven initiative, the organization began by renting a house in Ann Arbor to provide shelter for adults experiencing homelessness. Over the years, it has evolved into a national model of public-private partnership, expanding its services to include day and overnight shelters for women, and collaborating with various service providers to help individuals achieve permanent housing.

Our Impact

Focusing on ending homelessness rather than merely stabilizing it, the Shelter Association provides comprehensive services that assist clients in transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing. Programs like the Pathways Program and the Warming Center have successfully housed numerous individuals, addressing their ongoing needs.
