Our Story

Founded in 1994 by Donna Katzin and a group of U.S. anti-apartheid activists, Shared Interest was created to combat the legacy of apartheid in South Africa. The organization connects socially responsible investors with Black entrepreneurs, farmers, and microfinance institutions, facilitating guarantees that enable local banks to provide essential loans. This initiative fosters economic empowerment and sustainable development in communities that have faced systemic inequality.

Our Impact

Over the past 30 years, Shared Interest has transformed the lives of more than 2 million individuals by unlocking $131 million in lending, creating 1.9 million jobs, and supporting 237,000 microenterprises.
