Our Story

Founded in 1974 by Dr. Charles A. Garfield at the UCSF Cancer Institute, Shanti Project emerged as one of the first volunteer organizations in the United States dedicated to supporting individuals with life-threatening illnesses. Initially focused on providing care for those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS during the early epidemic, Shanti has since expanded its services to include support for women with breast cancer and LGBTQ+ older adults.

Impact

Shanti Project reduces isolation, enhances health and well-being, and improves quality of life for individuals experiencing inequities and barriers to care.
