Empowering Youth in North Portland
Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) was founded in 1981 by community leader Tony Hopson, Sr. in North Portland. Initially starting as a one-week summer camp for African-American teens, SEI has evolved into a year-round program dedicated to providing academic support and comprehensive services for youth and their families. The establishment of the Center for Self-Enhancement in 1997 marked a significant milestone, creating a safe haven for thousands of children and solidifying SEI's role as a cornerstone in the community.
Today, SEI serves as a comprehensive resource for youth and families, primarily focusing on African Americans and those living in poverty. With a commitment to overcoming cultural, educational, and economic barriers, SEI offers a wide array of education and social services, making it one of the leading multi-service organizations in the city.
Impact on the Community
SEI has made a remarkable impact, serving over 4,430 students with an impressive 93% high school graduation rate. The organization has awarded more than $3.3 million in energy assistance and distributed over 192,000 pounds of food, demonstrating its dedication to community support and youth empowerment.
