Our Story

The Self Advocacy Association of New York State was founded in 1986 by Bernard Carabello, a former resident of the Willowbrook State School. This organization is uniquely led by individuals with developmental disabilities, advocating for their rights and promoting equal citizenship.

Impact

Over the past 30 years, SANYS has established a grassroots network of over 150 self-advocacy groups, enhancing independence for tens of thousands of individuals with developmental disabilities across New York State.
