Our Story

In 2010, a dedicated group of Delaware citizens recognized the pressing need for consistent access to resources for vulnerable community members. This led to the formation of the Second Ward Community Initiative, which aligned with the City of Delaware’s mission to enhance the quality of life for all its residents. By August 2011, efforts were underway to develop a community center aimed at serving low-income and high-risk individuals in the Second Ward.

In 2012, the initiative took a significant step forward by acquiring a city building, transforming it into the Second Ward Community Center. This center not only served the Second Ward but also provided vital services to the entire Delaware community. As the organization evolved, it shifted its focus from being a gathering place to a comprehensive social service agency, ultimately receiving DBA status as Unity Community Center in September 2020. This transition was designed to promote inclusivity, strengthen partnerships, and expand programs with a focus on race, equity, and inclusion.

Impact

Unity Community Center serves the underserved and unites individuals on the South Side of Delaware, Ohio, and throughout Delaware County. The mission is to import opportunities, resources, and services to those in need while celebrating the rich history and culture of the South Side.
