Seacology: A Legacy of Island Conservation
Founded in 1990, Seacology emerged from a critical need to help island communities preserve their rich natural resources and cultural heritage. The journey began in the village of Falealupo, Samoa, where local leaders faced a dire ultimatum: build a new school or lose their government-funded teachers. With no funds available, the villagers considered selling logging rights to their ancestral rainforest. Dr. Paul Cox, an American ethnobotanist, intervened with a groundbreaking proposal: if he could raise the funds for a new school, would the village agree to conserve their forest? This innovative approach not only saved the school but also established a model for sustainable conservation that Seacology continues to follow today.
