Our Story
The Science Olympiad was founded in 1984 to create a premier team STEM competition in the United States. It began with Dr. Gerard J. Putz inviting John C. Cairns to share the program with educators in Michigan, leading to successful tournaments and national expansion. The first national tournament in 1985 featured 18 states, and today, nearly 8,000 secondary school teams from all 50 states participate.
