About School for Little Children of Evanston

Founded in 1934, the School for Little Children of Evanston emerged from a collaboration between the First Presbyterian Church and the National College of Education during the Great Depression. Over the past 85 years, SLC has dedicated itself to meeting the unique needs of the Evanston community through innovative programming and strong community partnerships.

Impactful Initiatives

In the 1970s, SLC pioneered inclusive education by integrating children with special needs into the classroom, supported by dedicated teaching assistants. From 2000 to 2004, SLC expanded its reach with the School for Little Children North, a full-day infant-toddler program aimed at providing high-quality, affordable childcare for low-income families. Although financial constraints led to its closure, this initiative remains a proud milestone in SLC's history.
