Scenic Rivers Land Trust, established in 1988, is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Anne Arundel County. Originally founded as the Severn River Land Trust, the organization has expanded its mission to protect land through voluntary preservation agreements and to educate landholders about conservation and stewardship. Over the years, Scenic Rivers has merged with other conservation entities, enhancing its capacity to safeguard vital landscapes.

Significant Achievements in Conservation

Since its inception, Scenic Rivers has made remarkable strides in land conservation. The organization secured its first voluntary conservation easement in 1989 and has since conserved over 400 acres and reforested an additional 10 acres. Notably, in 2010, Scenic Rivers partnered with the Maryland Environmental Trust to co-hold an easement on the expansive 631-acre Bacon Ridge Natural Area. This partnership exemplifies the organization's commitment to protecting significant natural areas for future generations.

Community Engagement and Education

Scenic Rivers actively engages with the community, providing education on the importance of land preservation. Through the Anne Arundel County’s Forestry and Forested Land Protection Grant Program, the organization has incentivized landowners to conserve their properties, awarding $2.3 million in grants. This initiative not only accelerates land conservation efforts but also fosters a culture of stewardship among local residents.
