Scenic Houston
EIN: 85-4069961 · Houston, TX
Our Story
Founded in 1966, Scenic Houston emerged from a grassroots movement led by architect Ralph Anderson and attorney Carroll Shaddock to combat the rampant billboard blight in the city. This advocacy group, originally known as Billboards Limited, successfully banned new billboards in 1980 and established scenic districts to enhance Houston's visual landscape.
Our Impact
Since its inception, Scenic Houston has dramatically reduced the number of billboards from over 10,000 in 1980 to just 1,309 in 2019. The organization has also created nineteen scenic districts and secured funding for landscaping projects, contributing to over 820 acres of green ribbon corridors.
