Our Story

Founded in 1988 by Marlu West, Save The Sea Turtles International emerged from a deep commitment to protect marine life. Inspired by her upbringing in a family involved in turtle leather trade, Marlu dedicated her life to reversing the devastation she witnessed. Together with her son, Juan Oliphant, and daughter-in-law, Ocean Ramsey, the organization has expanded its mission to include coral reefs and community engagement.
