Our Story
Established in 1952, Save the Dunes is dedicated to protecting and advocating for the Indiana Dunes, Lake Michigan, and surrounding natural areas. Founded by Dorothy Buell and a group of passionate local women, the organization emerged to safeguard the untouched dunes from development and pollution, ultimately leading to the creation of the Indiana Dunes National Park.

Save the Dunes has successfully advocated for the establishment and expansion of the Indiana Dunes National Park, which now spans over 15,000 acres. This effort has been crucial in preserving the region's biodiversity, which includes over 1,100 plant species and a variety of wildlife.
