About the Caretta Research Project

Founded in 1972, the Caretta Research Project (CRP) emerged from a collaboration between the Savannah Science Museum, Wassaw Island Trust, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to address the alarming decline of sea turtle populations in the Northwest Atlantic. Since 1973, CRP has been dedicated to monitoring and protecting the loggerhead sea turtle population nesting on Wassaw Island, implementing rigorous nest protection procedures to maximize hatchling production.

Impact of Conservation Efforts

For nearly 50 years, CRP has successfully contributed to the recovery of one of the largest loggerhead populations in the Western Hemisphere, significantly increasing hatchling production and raising public awareness about the importance of sea turtle conservation.
