Our Story
In 1896, John Beale, a New England tea and coffee merchant, discovered the beauty of Santa Barbara and built a magnificent estate called Vegamar. After his passing, this estate transformed into the Santa Barbara Zoo, which opened its doors in 1963. The Zoo is committed to preserving and enhancing the natural world through education, research, and recreation.
