Our Story

In 2012, the vision of Santa Barbara High School's Principal John Becchio led to the creation of the Computer Science Academy. Inspired by a passionate group of Robotics Club students, the initiative began with the recruitment of dedicated educators, including calculus teacher Richard Johnston and advisors from prestigious institutions like Cal Poly and MIT. Under the leadership of Paul Muhl, the academy developed a cutting-edge curriculum that emphasizes programming and robotics.

By 2016, the academy had evolved, with Richard Johnston stepping into the Director role, followed by Sky Adams, the first female Director, in 2020. This journey reflects a commitment to inclusivity and excellence in computer science education.

Impact

The SBHS Computer Science Academy is dedicated to exposing students to the field of computer science. Research indicates that underrepresented students who engage with AP Computer Science in high school are seven times more likely to pursue it in college, while women are ten times more likely. This program is transforming lives and shaping futures.
