Our Story

The Sankofa Community Development Corporation was founded in 2008 by Rashida Ferdinand, with the support of Lower Ninth Ward residents. Initially known as the Historic Lower Ninth Ward Council for Arts and Sustainability, the organization launched the Sankofa Marketplace, a vibrant hub for local growers, musicians, and artists. Over the years, Sankofa has expanded its focus to include neighborhood restoration, fresh food access, and comprehensive community economic development.

Impact

Since January 2020, Sankofa CDC’s food pantry has provided over 132,000 pounds of fresh and healthy food to families in need. Each pantry box serves as a vital resource for children and the elderly, ensuring they receive essential support during challenging times.
