Our Story

Founded in 1923 by Setsuzo Ota sensei and a group of Issei Japanese Americans, the San Gabriel Judo Dojo has a rich history rooted in the El Monte, California area. Ota sensei, a direct student of Jigoro Kano, established the dojo in Temple City in 1929, where it has thrived ever since. Despite being disbanded during World War II due to internment, the dojo was revitalized post-war by Sogioka sensei and Kay Kawai sensei. Today, San Gabriel Judo boasts over 145 members and is recognized as one of the top ten judo dojos in the United States, producing numerous national and Pan American medalists.

Impact

Under the guidance of Endow sensei, San Gabriel Judo has seen remarkable growth, with membership exceeding 100 students. The dojo has cultivated local, state, and national champions, alongside certified coaches and referees. In 2019, Endow sensei was honored as Coach of the Year by USA Judo, following the dojo's participation in the National Championships, where over 60 competitors qualified to represent the USA internationally, bringing home multiple medals.
