Our Story

The SF Market was established in 1963 when independent produce merchants were relocated from downtown San Francisco to a shared facility. Over the decades, it has evolved alongside the city and the produce industry, becoming a vital part of San Francisco's culinary landscape. Merchants at The SF Market distribute a diverse range of produce to local retailers, including restaurants and grocery stores, while also leading initiatives like the City’s composting program to return organic waste to regional farms.

Our Impact

The SF Market’s award-winning Food Recovery Program collaborates with 15 independent merchants to redirect surplus food to local community organizations. Since its launch in August 2016, the program has recovered over 8,500,000 pounds of food, equating to approximately 7,000,000 meals provided to those in need, significantly enhancing access to healthy food in the Bay Area.
