Our Story
The Dawn Center of Hernando County, formerly known as the Hernando County Rape Crisis Spouse Abuse Center, has been a beacon of hope for survivors of domestic and sexual violence since December 1986. Initially a satellite office of Marion County, the center faced significant challenges, including the need to transport women and children 110 miles for safe shelter. In 1993, a dedicated group of citizens, led by then State Senator Ginny Brown-Waite, raised $95,000 to purchase a four-floor home, transforming it into Hernando County's only safe house for victims of domestic violence.
By Spring 1994, the Dawn Center opened its doors to provide a safe haven for women and children, offering counseling, support groups, and essential life skills in a nurturing environment. Over the years, the center has expanded its facilities and services, including a significant addition in 2004 that increased shelter capacity to 40 residents. With a commitment to safety, the center has enhanced security measures to ensure a secure environment for all.
Today, the Dawn Center serves over 1,400 survivors annually, providing vital intervention services such as a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, outreach services, and legal advocacy. The center also focuses on primary prevention, engaging the next generation to foster social change and eliminate family violence and sexual assault.
