Our Story

Founded by Msgr. Bob McDermott in 1986, Saint Joseph’s Carpenter Society began its mission by renovating a home for a Vietnamese refugee family in East Camden. This initial effort sparked a broader revitalization initiative aimed at transforming East Camden into a vibrant neighborhood. Over the years, SJCS has expanded its reach, rehabilitating abandoned homes and providing affordable housing to local families across Camden and South Jersey.

Impact

With over 1,000 homes renovated and more than 3,300 individuals educated through its Homebuyers Academy, SJCS has played a crucial role in stabilizing and revitalizing East Camden and surrounding communities.
