SAARA of Virginia began in 1996 when a group of passionate individuals came together during a Substance Abuse Awareness Week luncheon in Fairfax County. This grassroots effort led to the incorporation of SAARA of Northern Virginia in 1997, followed by the attainment of 501(c)(3) status in 1998. The organization was founded on the principles of inclusivity and authenticity, mobilizing the recovery community to ensure that every voice is heard.
As the leading voice in Virginia on substance use disorder and recovery, SAARA provides essential education, advocacy, and support to individuals and communities.
