Our Story

Ruth Ellis Center is named after Ruth Ellis, a trailblazer who dedicated her life to supporting marginalized communities. Born in 1899, Ruth was one of Detroit’s oldest and proudest Black lesbians. In the 1940s, she provided shelter and affirmation to those ostracized due to their race or sexual orientation. Her legacy lives on as the center continues to uphold her values of community responsibility and support.
