About Roper Mountain Science Center
Roper Mountain Science Center, located in Greenville, South Carolina, stands as a beacon of collaboration between public and private resources. Established in 1985, this innovative center was born from the vision of the School District of Greenville County, aiming to provide 68,000 students with enriching hands-on science experiences. The journey began in 1982 when an advisory council of parents, educators, and business leaders was formed to develop a comprehensive master plan for the center. With the appointment of Darrell Harrison as director in 1983, the vision took shape, leading to the approval of a master plan by the school board in 1984.
Through a unique cooperative financing model, the advisory council raised funds to construct the center while the school district covered salaries and operational costs. Community support from organizations like the Junior League and Medical Society Auxiliary was crucial in the early stages. Over the years, the advisory council evolved into the Roper Mountain Science Center Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fundraising and volunteerism. To date, the Association has raised over six million dollars, funding the construction of all center buildings and various capital improvement projects.
Since its inception, Roper Mountain Science Center has witnessed remarkable growth, with annual student attendance soaring from 4,600 to over 80,000, including 50,000 onsite and 30,000 through outreach programs. The center proudly offers free school programs to all Greenville County students, ensuring equitable access to science education.
