In the summer of 1992, steam and gas engine enthusiasts gathered in Goochland County, Virginia, to discuss the possibility of hosting a steam and gas engine show. This informal meeting led to the formation of the Rockville-Centerville Steam and Gas Historical Association, which organized its first show in October of that year, attracting around 5,000 attendees. The revenue generated from this event was dedicated to supporting local organizations.

Over the years, Field Day has evolved from a single-day event to a three-day celebration held every September at Redfield Farm in Amelia County. This family-friendly event embodies the spirit of an old-time country fair, featuring museum-quality exhibits and preserving historic buildings. Dedicated volunteers have transformed Field Day into a cherished community tradition, fostering engagement and a love for local history.
