Our Story
The River Road African American Museum was founded on March 12, 1994, by the Hambrick family, led by the visionary Kathe Hambrick. Established to preserve the rich history and contributions of African Americans in Louisiana, particularly those who lived and worked on plantations along the Mississippi River, the museum has become a vital educational resource. After a devastating fire destroyed the original location, the museum relocated to its current site in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, where it continues to grow and educate the public about African American history and culture.
