Our Story
In 1975, a group of dedicated individuals from the College of William & Mary and local citizens recognized the urgent need for an adult literacy program. This initiative led to the establishment of Literacy for Life, originally known as the Adult Skills Program. Under the leadership of Rita Varnes Welsh, the program expanded its reach to serve adult learners in the Williamsburg community. Over the years, Literacy for Life has evolved, now offering offsite classes in partnership with local businesses and nonprofits, impacting approximately 600 community members annually.
