Our Story

In the summer of 1989, members of the Rio Grande Presbyterian Church were inspired by their pastor to take action against hunger in New Mexico. What began as a mission to provide emergency food to the local neighborhood quickly evolved into the establishment of an independent food pantry, now known as the Rio Grande Food Project. Officially opening its doors in December of that year, the project has grown significantly, fueled by seed funding from the Bicentennial Fund of the Presbyterian Church USA and generous donations from church members and community grants. Over the years, the dedicated volunteers have distributed thousands of pounds of food, ensuring that no one in the community goes hungry.

Our Impact

For over 33 years, the Rio Grande Food Project has been a beacon of hope, serving as the largest food pantry on Albuquerque’s westside. The organization not only provides food but also addresses the root causes of food insecurity through various initiatives.
