Our Story

Born in the wake of the 2016 election, the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation was founded by hospitality veterans John deBary and Alex Pemoulie. They recognized the urgent need to support restaurant workers facing challenges related to wages, racial and gender equity, and mental health. After extensive planning, RWCF achieved 501(c)(3) status in May 2018, becoming a pioneering public charity dedicated to improving the lives of restaurant workers. In its inaugural year, RWCF raised $11,000 and granted funds to three organizations. By 2020, RWCF had raised nearly $7 million for crisis relief, demonstrating a commitment to systemic change in the industry.

Our Impact

By tackling quality-of-life issues that disproportionately affect restaurant workers, RWCF strengthens the workforce and enhances opportunities for advancement. In 2020 alone, RWCF raised nearly $7 million for crisis relief, distributing over $3.325 million in direct financial assistance and $845,000 to nonprofits providing essential crisis relief services.
