About Relate Counseling Center

Founded over fifty years ago, Relate Counseling Center emerged from a community-driven initiative in the western suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A group of dedicated parents, educators, and community leaders recognized the urgent need to address the rising issues of disenfranchisement, substance abuse, and delinquency among youth. In 1968, two local churches opened their doors, allowing adolescents to drop in and discuss their challenges. This grassroots effort quickly evolved into a formal organization, and in 1969, Relate Counseling Center was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Our Journey and Services

From its inception, Relate has been committed to fostering strong relationships as the cornerstone of healthy development. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services to include individual, couples, family, and group counseling, as well as school-based mental health programs. Today, Relate positively impacts over 13,000 individuals annually, with 65% being youth and their families. The organization partners with local food shelves to provide onsite services and offers educational presentations to raise awareness about mental health issues.

Impact of Our Work

Relate Counseling Center has achieved remarkable outcomes, with 98% of clients coming through personal referrals. An impressive 85% of clients self-report stabilized or improved mental or chemical health after receiving services. By providing high-quality counseling at the lowest cost in the western twin cities, Relate ensures that over half of its clients receive services for significantly reduced or no fees.
