Our Story

In 1975, a vision was born when William DeVita, still in graduate school, opened a variety store at the Capital District Psychiatric Center. This small not-for-profit initiative employed individuals with psychiatric disabilities, laying the groundwork for what would become Rehabilitation Support Services, Inc. (RSS). By 1979, the success of this venture led to the establishment of two community residences in Albany, NY, designed to provide stable housing and psychiatric rehabilitation services to adults facing serious mental illness.

Over the years, RSS has evolved into one of the largest and most diverse mental health agencies in New York State, continuously innovating to meet the critical needs of the community. Today, RSS serves over 3,000 individuals and their families annually, providing high-quality behavioral health care across various demographics, including adults, adolescents, the elderly, and those experiencing homelessness or dual diagnoses of mental illness and substance abuse.
