About Recovery Beyond

Recovery Beyond has its roots in mountaineering, stemming from the volunteer-driven Climbing Out of Homelessness Program initiated by Mike Johnson and Mark Ursino in 2011. This innovative program guided individuals from the Seattle Union Gospel Mission through a transformative 10-month training, culminating in a summit climb of Mt. Rainier. The inspiring journey is captured in the documentary, A New High, released in 2015. In 2016, Recovery Beyond Paradigm was established as a 501c3 nonprofit to expand the vision of an outdoor recovery community, supporting those overcoming substance use challenges. In 2019, the organization was renamed Recovery Beyond, focusing on guiding individuals who have moved past the initial crisis of addiction and are asking, “What’s next?”
