Providing Quality Education
Supporting Arts-Integrated Learning
Fostering Community Involvement

Our Story

Roots School first opened its doors in 2006 with just six children in a small building on the North Shore of Maui. The vision of founder Melita Charan and a dedicated team of educators quickly transformed into a thriving educational community. By the end of the first school year, enrollment had doubled, prompting the search for a larger facility to accommodate the growing interest in quality education.

With the generous support of parents and community members, Roots School obtained its nonprofit status and relocated to its current site at 740 Haiku Road in 2012. The school’s commitment to providing exceptional education in the Upcountry area has only strengthened over the years. In 2017, Roots was able to purchase the property, ensuring its future as a cornerstone of the community.

Accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Roots School emphasizes critical thinking and creativity through an arts-integrated, project-based approach. This methodology enables students to develop their unique potential and succeed in further education.

Impact

Since its inception, enrollment has grown over 1,000%, now serving 75 students from Preschool to 6th Grade.
