Our Story

Founded in 2003 by Dr. Mary Jane N. Hender and Reverend Dr. Gordon Butcher, Reading Power, Inc. is dedicated to transforming the lives of children in North Chicago and Zion, Illinois through personalized literacy intervention. The program was inspired by the Reading Recovery model and has evolved to incorporate the latest research in phonics instruction. By focusing on oral language development, vocabulary building, comprehension, and fluency, Reading Power tailors its one-to-one tutoring to meet the unique learning styles of each student.

Impact

In the 2023-2024 school year, 72% of Reading Power students achieved grade-level expectations, with an average increase of five book levels. Continuous assessments ensure that each child receives the support they need to thrive in their reading journey.
