Our Story

Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California (RIFSoCal) was founded in 1972 and has become the largest multi-site program of the national Reading Is Fundamental organization. The mission is to promote literacy and motivate children to read by providing new books to create home libraries for underserved children in Southern California.

Impact

RIFSoCal has reached over 40,000 children each year, with 95% of those children eligible for the National School Lunch Program. The program has shown significant improvements in literacy rates, with standardized test scores in El Monte increasing from 30% to 40% for students meeting or exceeding standards in English Language Arts and Literacy from 2015 to 2019.
