Readability Matters is a tech-for-good nonprofit founded in 2019, but its roots trace back 15 years. The visionaries behind this initiative, Kathy Crowley and Marjorie Jordan, recognized the potential of alternate text formats to assist dyslexic readers as early as 2004. With advancements in technology, they saw an opportunity to implement personalized reading formats on a larger scale.

In 2015, they conducted a groundbreaking study in a classroom setting, discovering that a simple switch to the clean round font, AvantGarde, improved reading fluency for 55% of students. Further enhancements, such as character spacing and expansion, benefited an additional 40% of readers. As tech companies began to offer customizable text features on devices, the founders envisioned a future where digital text could be tailored to individual needs, creating limitless possibilities for personalized reading.

By 2018, using a prototype of Adobe Reader, the team confirmed their hypothesis: small changes in text format could significantly enhance reading outcomes. This led to the establishment of Readability Matters, dedicated to sharing insights with tech and publishing companies, fostering a community where every reader can thrive.
