Our Story

Founded in 1995 by Dr. Marilyn Nye, the Read-Aloud Volunteer Program began with just three readers at Downer Elementary in San Pablo. Inspired by the SMART initiative in Oregon, this program quickly expanded and became a nonprofit in 1997, now boasting 120 dedicated volunteer readers across multiple elementary schools.

Our Impact

Read-Aloud organizes one-on-one reading sessions that empower children to develop essential literacy skills, boost their self-confidence, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading. By enhancing literacy, children gain access to a world of opportunities.
